The Korle Bu Chapter of the Federation of Allied Health Professionals will suspend outpatient services at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital starting Friday, August 2, due to the hospital's refusal to appoint an independent body to oversee their operations.
This group includes the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Ghana Physiotherapy Association, and the Ghana Society of Radiographers, among 15 other professional associations.
They are currently managed by the hospital’s Medical Directorate but argue that their affairs are not being properly managed and are demanding the creation of a dedicated directorate.
Dr. Francis Kwakye Antwi, the local Chairman of the chapter, addressed the media with a warning that if their demands are not met, a nationwide strike will begin on Monday, August 6.
“If the board and management do not advertise for the position of Director of Allied Health by midnight today, we will start with a work-to-rule action on Thursday, escalating to a full-blown strike on Friday, August 2, suspending all OPD services,” Dr Antwi stated.
He added, “On Monday, August 5, we will withdraw in-patient services. If by Tuesday, August 6, management has still not responded, we will initiate a full-blown strike, and if there is no positive feedback from Korle Bu’s management and board, this will escalate to a nationwide strike.”
