The Animal Welfare League, a dedicated NGO committed to the welfare of animals, has organised an informative training workshop for poultry farmers in Ghana. Themed "Improving Poultry Welfare and Productivity in Ghana," the event highlighted the benefits of adopting cage-free systems for rearing birds and other animals.
The workshop featured a lineup of distinguished speakers, each bringing their expertise and passion to the fore. Mr Victor Oppong Adjei, the National President of the Poultry Farmers Association, emphasized the importance of improving animal welfare standards to enhance productivity. "The cage-free system not only benefits the animals but also leads to better yields and healthier produce for consumers," he noted.
Dr Daniel Abiliba of the Animal Welfare League elaborated on the scientific and ethical advantages of cage-free farming. He explained, "Cage-free systems allow birds to exhibit natural behaviours, leading to reduced stress and disease prevalence. This ultimately results in healthier flocks and higher quality eggs and meat."
Dr Patrick Akandi-Agbodzi, the Volta Regional Veterinary Officer, addressed the health implications of various rearing methods.
He urged farmers to transition to cage-free systems, stating, "Healthier animals mean fewer veterinary costs and better overall farm sustainability. Cage-free systems are a step towards more humane and profitable farming practices."
The Volta Regional Director of Agriculture, whose insights provided a broader agricultural perspective, encouraged farmers to embrace modern, welfare-oriented practices. "The future of farming in Ghana lies in sustainable and ethical practices. By adopting cage-free systems, we not only improve animal welfare but also align with global farming standards," he advised.
Farmers who attended the workshop expressed their appreciation for the valuable knowledge shared. Many were inspired to make immediate changes to their farming practices. "This workshop has opened my eyes to the benefits of cage-free systems. I am excited to implement these practices on my farm," said one attendee.
The Animal Welfare League plans to continue its efforts in promoting animal welfare and sustainable farming practices across Ghana. This workshop marks a significant step towards improving the standards of poultry farming in the country, ensuring both the well-being of animals and the prosperity of farmers.
