The Minority in Parliament has asserted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)'s proposed 24-hour economy is aimed at rectifying the economic turmoil created by the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party government.
The caucus argues that the Akufo-Addo administration's reckless and irresponsible borrowing has inflated the national debt to over GHC740 billion without yielding any positive outcomes.
In an interview with the media on Monday, July 29, the Ranking Member on the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee, Eric Opoku, emphasised that the 24-hour economy will be a transformative initiative.
He explained that the policy would create more jobs for Ghanaians, thereby broadening the tax base and providing more opportunities for the youth.
Mr Opoku further noted that the economic challenges brought about by the Akufo-Addo administration will require diligence and experience to overcome.
“We have been reckless and irresponsible for the last seven years in our borrowing as a nation. From March 6, 1957, to January 7, 2017, Ghana was 60 years old, and our total debt was GHC120 billion, now within the last seven years, we have increased our debt stock to GHC742 billion. Indicating that in the last seven years, we have borrowed GHC622 billion. This is unprecedented in the history of our country."
“To get us out of this mess, what we have to do is to work hard, we used to work for 8 hours, what we’re saying is that we’re not going to rest for the18 hours left, let’s make economic use of all these hours,” he insisted.
