Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mahama Ayariga, has urged the electorate of Northern Ghana not to be misled by claims that former President John Mahama neglected their region during his presidency.
Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign launch on Saturday, July 27, in Tamale, Mr Ayariga emphasised that Mr Mahama had significantly contributed to the development of his home region.
He highlighted several projects undertaken by Mr Mahama in Northern Ghana, indicating his commitment to the area.
“Do not be deceived that John Mahama did not do anything for the North and so the North should not vote for him,” he cautioned.
He mentioned the construction of roads from Bimbilla to Gushegu and Walewale to Gambaga, the phase two expansion of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the development of the Tamale International Airport, and the establishment of nursing training colleges, among other initiatives.
He argued that, among the two northern presidential candidates, John Mahama is superior to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr Ayariga underscored Mahama's successful tenure as chairman of the economic management team, pointing out that under Mahama's leadership, Ghana achieved the highest economic growth rate of 14.5% in 2010.
In contrast, Ayariga criticised Dr Bawumia's performance in the same role, highlighting the issues that have afflicted the banking and financial sectors during his tenure.
He stressed that Mahama's track record demonstrated his capability to drive development and economic stability.
The lawmaker called on the electorate to vote overwhelmingly for John Mahama in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections, to restore progress and bring back effective leadership to the Jubilee House.
He encouraged the audience to support Mahama's bid to return to the presidency and continue his work for the betterment of Northern Ghana and the entire country.
