The people of Songor in Ada are demanding that portions of the land allocated to Electrochem Ghana be left for members of the community to engage in community mining.
According to the spokesperson of the Ada Songor Lagoon Association Community, Abraham Tetteh, it was wrong for huge portions of the land to be allocated to one company.
He explained that vast land was not needed to carry out salt mining, and hence leaving portions of the land to the community would go a long way to promote economic growth in the area.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on July 26, he said “The only thing which would make as to support Electrochem is that Electrochem should be at a particular place.
“You see you don’t need a whole vast land to mine. Like that way you will say gold is here. Our sea is not like that. It is only the sea water and sunshine needed to dry it out," he said.
He added that leasing vast lands to one company was wrong and would negatively affect the community because many of the residents are engaged in salt mining.
“The only problem is the mining power. The license that they have given. The license is so powerful. That when you are holding that license in your hand, anything with that concession you have power over it," he added.
