Ghana's athletics coach, Andrew Kwame Adu Owusu, believes Ghana's 4x100m relay team has overpampered Ghanaians so much that they forget their achievements.
In the last six years, the team has been on the rise as far as athletics in Ghana is concerned. The 4x100m relay team which has been led by Benjamin Azamati and Joeseph Paul Amoah burst onto the scene in 2019, going on to win gold at the African Games in Rabat.
The team also participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The recent involvements have been at the 2023 African Games, the Penn Relays and Bahamas Relays with the latter securing their qualification to the 2024 Olympic Games.
In that period, they have also gone on to break the national record on numerous occasions but their lack of success on the bigger stage has meant they continue to be criticised by Ghanaians.
However, Owusu believes Ghanaians need to recognise the achievements of the team in the last few years.
"They've spoiled us," said the athletics coach during Wednesday night's Gold Chase ahead of Paris 2024. "[They have spoiled us] to the extent that sometimes when we talk about their exploits, we talk about it as if it's just another day on the track. This is the fastest-ever quartet that we have put together.
He, however, cautioned the team that their progress in the said years only means more demands from Ghanaians, something the team is well-informed about.
"They have broken the national record at least thrice and they are ranked seventh in the world...that's where I think we fall short sometimes," he continued.
"When you put yourselves in those positions, that comes with pressure and you have to perform and I think that is something the boys understand very well."
