Public Relations Officer of Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Saviour Kudze says there must be a public conversation on the appropriate number of Supreme Court judges.
This follows calls by the speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin that there is a need to urgently legislate a cap on the size of the Supreme Court.
The Speaker's comment on Monday was a response to the nomination of two new judges to the Supreme Court bench following their approval by the Judicial Council.
According to President Akufo-Addo, both nominees are to be vetted by Parliament as constitutionally mandated.
The latest nomination comes weeks after the Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo wrote a letter to President Akufo-Addo, asking him to nominate five judges to the Supreme Court.
According to the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court needs more judges to handle the overwhelming number of cases currently before it.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Mr Kudze said that due to the varying views on the matter, there is a need for a national dialogue.
He argued that the GBA has already recommended that the number of justices be reviewed to address the increasing number of cases.
Mr Kudze said the review must include modalities to ensure that an evaluation is conducted every decade to determine whether there are enough justices to handle the cases.
“Yes in a sense because if you look at our recommendation that we did when the CBS request came we said that based on the work load, we agree to do the conventional number of 20 and then every 10 years, we have to review the work load. If need be we ask for more.
“If there would be no need to add, we remain where it is. So, for me we must have a national debate on this,” he added,
