The recent re-appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) could suffer a setback following the filing of a court injunction.
An alumnus of the University, Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, has filed an order of interlocutory injunction seeking to thwart the second-term appointment of Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, which effectively commences on August 1, 2024.
He cites breaches of the University's Statutes in the reappointment of the Vice-Chancellor supervised by the former Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who is the Chairperson of the University's Council.
According to the applicant, the procedure for the appointment wherein a seven-member Search Committee is constituted to propose an ideal candidate for consideration and the advertisement of the vacancy of the Vice Chancellor position for the application of other viable candidates were not followed.
In the application, Mr. Ohene Asare described as “unlawful”, “illegal”, and “unconscionable” the conduct of the university and the governing council in the renewal of the appointment of the VC.
According to him, despite the illegality of the reappointment, the former Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, and Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson are bent on proceeding to act on the purported renewed appointment, prompting his instant application for the injunction.
The Kumasi High Court is expected to hear the case and make a ruling on July 30, 2024.
