Work resumes on Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road

Construction has resumed on the Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road project after a temporary halt caused by Ghana's IMF bailout programme.

The 23-kilometer stretch aims to connect the Greater Accra Region with the Eastern Region, serving as a crucial link for regional connectivity and economic development.

Originally budgeted at GH¢195 million, the project is jointly financed by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Ghana.

Groundbreaking took place in July 2022, with an initial completion target set for 24 months.

However, the country's IMF bailout and subsequent debt restructuring necessitated a suspension of the project, impacting road users and local commuters.

Residents have expressed relief at the project's restart but have also emphasised the urgency of its completion.

The road's deteriorated state has posed health and economic challenges, prompting calls for expedited construction to alleviate these hardships.

Concerns from commuters highlight issues such as the road's uneven surface and inadequate drainage, which have contributed to health risks and transportation difficulties.

Nicholas Tieku, the project site engineer, confirmed the availability of funding from the construction firm, enabling the resumption of work.

He outlined revised timelines for completion and detailed the scope of ongoing and upcoming construction activities aimed at improving road conditions and ensuring sustainable infrastructure development.
