A former Director of the Institute of Adult Education (now the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education), Miranda Greenstreet, is advocating for universal education across all strata of society.

Professor Greenstreet said every individual, regardless of their occupation—be it a farmer, carpenter, or any other profession—should have access to education at various levels.

She noted that such education goes beyond formal schooling, encompassing all forms of learning, and emphasised that a well-educated populace is crucial as it equips individuals with knowledge of civic rights and responsibilities, thereby fostering holistic societal development.

Speaking on The Sages on Joy News with Kojo Yankson, she said: "You become more incentivised because you need more resources, you become a better entrepreneur, and so on and so forth. So, we believe in education for all levels and not just education for a few”.

The educationist noted that adult education must be adequately resourced to effectively fulfil its role.

She stressed the importance of ensuring that educators in adult education are capable of teaching effectively, thereby motivating individuals to actively contribute to national development.

Professor Greenstreet underscored that education forms the cornerstone of nation-building, emphasising that this responsibility extends beyond any single institution like the one at Legon to encompass all institutions striving to excel in their educational missions.

“I have not actually surveyed them to know whether they are doing enough or not, but it pleases me that people now understand that it is important for everyone in society to get educated in their own fields of learning or working,” she noted.
