The American Soybean Association and the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (ASA/WISHH) in partnership with Agrihouse has organised the 4th edition of the Ghana Poultry Day, dubbed “Celebrating Diversity and Nutrition: Roast, Taste and Nourish the Nation”, on the 1st of July 2024.
The Ghana Poultry Day initiative is celebrated annually to promote the consumption and patronage of the country’s poultry sector, raise awareness of the pivotal role played by the poultry industry in areas such as employment generation, food security, and economic growth to help foster a greater appreciation for the sector among stakeholders and the public and fortify its growth and sustainability.
The Ghana Poultry Day event featured various activities, including a cooking competition by chefs showcasing poultry recipes, insightful town hall discussions led by industry leaders, and an exhibition for stakeholders across multiple sectors to forge partnerships.
To celebrate eggs’ versatility and nutritional benefits, the ‘Eggstra-O campaign’, whose objectives are to promote the functional and nutritional benefits of eggs, treated every attendee at the event to a variety of egg dishes.
Attendees sampled various egg dishes from traditional favourites like “nkosua ne meko” and "Egg Mportormportor" to contemporary snacks like quiche, egg pastry rolls, and cupcakes. There were also egg demonstrations on how to make omelettes, poached and scrambled eggs.
Beyond the festivities, the event served as an educational platform. Attendees learned about the numerous health benefits of eggs, including their high-quality protein, cell-protecting antioxidants, and potential to lower the risk of stroke and heart disease.
Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat (GNECS), National Coordinator, Comfort Kyerewaa Acheampong in her address, challenged Ghanaian poultry farmers to produce more eggs to meet the demand for daily consumption.
The event saw patronage from some queen mothers from the Volta, Ashanti, Eastern, Northern and Central regions and Chef Failatu Abdul-Razak (of Guinness World Record Longest Cooking Marathon fame).
Students from renowned schools such as Accra Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Ngleshi Amanfro SHS, and Achimota SHS were also in attendance for the festivities.
Among the notable guests were Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture (Crops) Yaw Frimpong Addo (2023 Best Farmer), Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Charge of Livestock, Mr Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and Chef Anthony Aidoo from the World Food Forum.
