Security Specialist and Consultant, Prof. Kwesi Aning says that ultimate security comes from citizens feeling safe and urges politicians to fulfil their public duties after seeking votes from the populace.
He highlights a significant gap between political promises and actual delivery, citing illegal mining (galamsey) as a prime example.
Prof. Aning points out that illegal activities such as galamsey cannot thrive without the complicity of individuals within government ranks across affected areas.
Speaking on JoyNews AM Show, the security consultant stated that, “So that it becomes a business by itself, fuelled by collusion and corruption by basically turning a blind eye to what ought not to happen."
Prof. Aning said that when those entrusted with governance divert state resources meant for creating jobs, hospitals, and schools for personal gain, it forces people to consider drastic measures.
He noted a growing social awareness, indicating a disconnect where governing officials appear to underestimate public sentiment.
“... The masses, the youth, and I think in Ghana the statistic yesterday was that 57% of our population are under 25 years old. I think Francis Poku's caution was that the indices that were present in some of his earlier warnings in 1975 are still present and even much more disturbing”, he said.
