The Police administration have come under heavy criticisms from motorists over what they say was poor traffic management in parts of Accra on Saturday morning. All major roads linking the La General Hospital was closed to vehicular traffic as part of security measures towards President Obama’s visit to the hospital. According to a Joy correspondent, mourners who were on their way to bury a dead relative had to carry the casket and make the journey on foot because they will not be granted access. But for insults hurled by onlookers at the police personnel who were dotted along the road, a pregnant woman in labour would not have been allowed a thoroughfare and subsequently to the hospital for delivery, the correspondent added. Passengers who had waited in the traffic for hours had to alight and make the rest of the journey on foot. In an interview with Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe, the Head of Public Relations of the Police administration, Kwesi Ofori appealed to motorists for the inconvenience caused by closure of the roads but insisted, “Security cannot be compromised.” He admitted quite a number of the roads had been closed saying “people might suffer some inconveniences,” but he would not accept assertions that the situation had been poorly managed. He expressed concern over the plight of the pregnant woman in labour who was delayed momentarily, but was quick to add the “bottom line is that she was allowed to go.” Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com
