A trailer travelling from Burkina Faso to Accra overturned in an accident at Asona, near Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on the main Accra-Kumasi highway, resulting in a complete blockage of the road. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The cause of the trailer overturning remains unclear. However, its position on the highway has caused a significant traffic jam, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded for more than five hours.
Frustrated commuters who spoke to the media have called on authorities to expedite the dualization of the Accra-Kumasi Highway to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The accident has severely disrupted travel along one of Ghana’s busiest routes, underscoring the pressing need for improvements to enhance road safety and tackle traffic congestion.
Stranded travellers expressed concerns over the prolonged delay and stressed the importance of prompt intervention by road authorities.
“So what I noticed on the road was a vehicle that had fallen off and blocked the main highway and that has led to this serious gridlock. Those coming from the Accra side tried using the part of vehicles from Kumasi and vice versa and that is also part of what we are all witnessing here.
“I have been sitting in my car for more than two hours now, but people I enquired from said the gridlock started in the morning. I will suggest that the Accra-Kumasi highway is dualized immediately because these single lanes have not been helpful over the years," one traveller said.
Efforts are underway to clear the overturned trailer and restore traffic flow on the highway as swiftly as possible.
