Ga Manste, Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, launched the Homowo clean-up campaign in Accra on Friday, June 21, 2024.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign and the Asoafoatse Sanitation Task Force, Ga Manste urged his sub-chiefs and subjects to actively participate in the exercise to rid the city of filth in preparation for the annual Homowo Festival.
He emphasised the importance of unity and obedience to rules and regulations to ensure a successful exercise and cautioned that all shops and stores should remain closed during the clean-up exercise, which begins on July 2, 2024.
"No shop or store should open during the exercise" he cautioned.
The campaign, themed "Clean to celebrate Homowo," aims to keep the capital city clean beyond the annual festival, promoting a culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility.
Ga Manste expressed his delight at the campaign's apolitical nature, stressing that "sickness doesn't discriminate" and that unity of purpose is essential in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
He announced that the GA Traditional Council will conduct monthly performance reviews to ensure the campaign's sustainability, adding that the council will review "successes and challenges to re-strategise and improve the exercise."
Ga Manste commended Zoomlion and the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, for supporting this initiative with logistics and other resources. He prayed for blessing on him and his companies to enable him continue the good works.
The involvement of the GA Traditional Council, the highest traditional authority of the Ga state, marks a significant milestone in the campaign's efforts, demonstrating the council's commitment to the well-being of the Ga people and the city's development.
The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Seyram Alhassan, emphasised the importance of collective efforts in maintaining cleanliness, noting that it is not a one-time event, but a continuous process that requires the involvement of all citizens.
She commended the GA Traditional Council for taking the lead in the campaign and urged everyone to support the initiative to make Accra a clean and beautiful city.
On his part, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel N. K. Titus-Glover, reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life for all citizens in the capital city.
To achieve this, he tasked all metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives to ensure the city's cleanliness.
He emphasised the importance of hands-on leadership, urging MMDCEs to leave their offices and engage personally with the community to ensure the city's cleanliness.
"I have asked all metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives not to sit in the office but go round and get involved and ensure that the city is clean," he stated.
He announced that the Regional Coordinating Council has secured the necessary resources to support the initiative.
The Ministries of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, and other stakeholders also pledged their support for the campaign, demonstrating a united commitment to a cleaner and better Accra.
