The ANAQ Foundation says it is making progress in combating Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana through its extensive educational programmes.

The foundation's sustained awareness campaigns through its engagement with communities to educate residents, particularly men, on the crucial importance of selecting compatible partners to reduce the risk of passing on the disease, thereby empowering informed reproductive choices has led to preventive measures.

At a Father's Day event in Jachie, Ama Nyarko Attafuah-Quainoo, President of the ANAQ Foundation, highlighted the remarkable success of their educational programs, which have made a significant difference in the fight against the disease.

She said there is a growing understanding of sickle cell disease, and as a result, religious institutions are now encouraging couples to get tested for the condition before tying the knot

"With the education that we're doing a lot of people now understand the disease and now most churches insist those who are yet to marry to go and do the sickling test, so it's been positive," she said.

Ama emphasized the need to avoid stigmatizing mothers or attributing sickle cell disease to spiritual causes, instead advocating for shared responsibility in addressing the condition.

The event also provided education and screening for various health issues, including prostate and breast cancer, eye health, and more. In recognition of Father's Day, Ama highlighted the importance of honoring responsible fathers and acknowledging their vital role in families.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, praised the ANAQ Foundation for their annual events promoting fatherhood and health awareness, while the Chief of Jachie, Nana Boateng Kwaku Amoateng IV, urged fathers to embrace their responsibilities and actively contribute to their families' well-being, stressing the crucial role they play in ensuring family success.
