The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) has commenced a stakeholder engagement for the development of a new National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

It is in fulfillment of the requirements for the protection of biodiversity.

Following the global adoption of the Kumming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, it has become necessary for a revision of the national action plan to conform to the new order.

The first of a series of engagements was organized in the Ashanti Region, bringing together stakeholders from recognized non-governmental institutions and government agencies.

Representatives from local government authorities and the media were also present. The stakeholders were tasked to refine the draft national targets and identify activities that could be implemented to achieve the set targets.

Head of Biodiversity Unit at MESTI, Emeline Wright Hanson explained that, “We are going to input the submissions that were made here into what we have developed earlier and we put it together and do more stakeholder engagements like this one”.

The document will later be validated through similar engagements before submission to the Convention before February 2026. Early this year, the National Biodiversity Steering Committee went through the global targets to come out with a national target for each area.

A technical working group has also been put together to help with the drafting. The stakeholder engagement in the Ashanti Region was organized by the Ministry with support from Tropenbos Ghana.
