St. Thomas Aquinas SHS defeated its competitors in a fierce battle on Wednesday to secure a spot in the national championship of the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

They competed against Our Lady of Mercy SHS, Tema Secondary, and Ningo SHTS on the third day of the Greater Accra Regional qualifiers.

St. Thomas Aquinas, known for their academic prowess, dominated the entire contest with a staggering 42 points to win the competition.

The 2013 NSMQ winners, who were defeated by St. James Seminary SHS in a fierce battle for a quarter-finals slot in the 2023 NSMQ, made a strong comeback this year.

In the first round of the competition, they took a commanding lead with 22 points, followed by Tema Secondary with 15 points, Our Lady of Mercy with 11 points, and Ningo SHTS trailing behind.

St. Thomas Aquinas continued their dominance in the second round, widening the point gap with an impressive 35 points, leaving their competitors no chance to catch up.

The atmosphere became more intense as the contest entered the third round, with St. Thomas Aquinas continuing to demonstrate their academic prowess. They further widened the gap to 42 points.

However, they failed to secure additional points in the last round of the contest.

Tema Secondary School gained additional points, finishing in second place with 28 points. Our Lady of Mercy SHS and Ningo SHTS secured 21 points and 15 points, respectively.

For winning the regional qualifiers and securing a slot in the National Championship, St.Thomas Aquinas SHS was awarded a sum of GH₵1,000.00.
