Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement against Corruption, Edem Senanu, has disagreed with President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that combating corruption has been the cornerstone of his administration.
President Akufo-Addo stated that he was aware corruption thrives in environments where it can be concealed, and to address this, his government ensured the passage of the Right to Information Act (RTI) 2019, Act 989, during its first term to help combat it.
He claimed that under his tenure, combating corruption has been the cornerstone of his administration.
However, speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse, Mr Senanu said the President’s argument was far from the truth, as civil society groups did not see matters of corruption from the same perspective.
Mr Senanu argued that although significant progress has been made to resource anti-corruption agencies, within the framework of what is going on and the level of corruption in a given dispensation, the question should be how well the fight has been in the current dispensation.
“It appears to most of us that, a lot more efforts and support, a lot more robustness in responding to issues, isolating officials and allowing them without commentary to face the rule of law was required.
“And I don’t think the President own assessment is a true reflection of how we see from the civil society and the anti-corruption space," he said on June 10.
