Workers of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited in the Western Region joined hundreds of people to plant tree seedlings of various species in the Prestea Township to commemorate this year's Green Ghana Day.
Over 500 seedlings from the Forestry Commission, were distributed to the palace, banks, schools and other institutions for planting.
Speaking to the media on theme for the initiative “Our Land, Our Future” Justice Acquah, the Managing Director of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited explained why the they joined to mark the Green Ghana Day.
According to him, “Prestea, is a mining town and almost all the trees are gone. So, we are trying to make the town green to boost its green cover. Tree planting is very essential for the environment, due to climate change and global warming issues across the world”.
“Trees absorb carbon dioxide and in turn convert it into oxygen for our survival. There is a need to plant more trees to fight climate change, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce storm-water and flooding, provide shade and food among others”he added.
Mr Acquah noted that individuals and group of people are getting to understand the need for tree planting and encouraged all to embrace the Green Ghana project ongoing in the country.
“We are also empowering our employees and the communities to plant and nurture at least one tree in their various homes so it can multiply and lead to significant environmental transformation. We will continue to join other corporate bodies to make the Green Ghana agenda a success,” he said.
“Our company is committed to promoting environmentally sustainable practices. We are honoured to indulge in this initiative by planting trees on our various sites,”Mr Acquah concluded.
The Green Ghana Day was introduced in 2021 by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to inspire the public to plant trees as part of efforts to restore the country’s vegetation cover.
