In the wake of growing calls for his resignation or removal from office as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice over allegations of professional misconduct, Mr Godfred Dame appears to have found great favour before the president.
Without making any direct comment on the current controversy in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial in which a High Court Judge has advised Mr Dame to recuse himself, the president hailed Mr Dame as one of the best products shaped by his law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co. where Mr Dame received his professional legal practice.
President Akufo-Addo, who was speaking during the commissioning of the 'The Law House' project in Accra today, Monday, June 10, commended Mr Dame for seeing to the completion of a project that is over two decades old.
He noted that when Godfred Dame took office in 2021, the project was only 36% complete. He highlighted that Dame's commitment and support were crucial in reviving and completing the project.
He credited Dame's efforts for ensuring the initiative was not abandoned, which ultimately led to the successful completion of the celebrated structure.
“He [Attorney General] has done a yeoman’s job, and I say a hearty ayekoo [Congratulations] to him; after all, not to be overlooked, he is one of the many worthy products of Messrs. Akufo-Addo, Prempeh, and Co. Ladies and gentlemen, the importance of this building goes beyond its physical structure. It symbolises our strong dedication to upholding the tenets of the rule of law.”.
President Akufo-Addo emphasised that the rule of law is the foundation of any thriving democracy, ensuring that no one is above the law.
He stated that this principle guarantees equality before the law, a fair and impartial administration of justice, and the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms.
“It is the foundation upon which we build an equitable, free, and just society. Throughout my tenure as president, my administration has made considerable strides in strengthening the rule of law in Ghana.
We have embarked on a journey of digitalisation and modernization of our legal and judicial systems, recognising that in this digital age, the efficient administration of justice must keep pace with technological advancement,”he noted.
About The Law House project
The Law House project, initiated in 2001, was originally slated for completion in May 2004. However, it faced delays, leading to its termination and subsequent re-awarding on January 10, 2023, with final completion achieved in June 2024.
The project spanned the administrations of four presidents: John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Initially planned as an eight-story office building, the project was later revised to a ten-story structure with a two-level basement.
The final design includes conference rooms, 130 office spaces, 120 parking lots, an eating area, and various other facilities, significantly enhancing its capacity and functionality.
