The Odeibea Foundation, in partnership with Rebead, organised a 'Let’s Talk Climate Change and Health through Crafts' programme in Peki Avatile.
The event brought together about 200 participants for discussions on climate change, health education, and skill-building.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the Odeibea Foundation, Patricia Odeibea Bekoe, emphasized that rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and changing ecosystems are not just environmental issues but also critical health concerns.
She emphasised that climate change can exacerbate respiratory diseases, heat-related illnesses, and vector-borne diseases, urging the community to take proactive steps to mitigate these risks through sustainable practices and awareness.
A senior staff midwife at the Ho Teaching Hospital, Rosemary Thelma Akortsu, and Diana Brenda Boateng Adu, the In-charge at the Peki Government Hospital, addressed the dangers of ectopic pregnancies and teenage pregnancies within the community.
They also educated the people on the symptoms, risks, and necessary precautions to prevent ectopic pregnancies.
Furthermore, they addressed the high incidence of teenage pregnancies, discussing the social and health implications, and highlighting the importance of education and support systems to empower young girls to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Also, Elsie Klu taught participants basic bead-making techniques.
The hands-on session allowed attendees to create their own beaded accessories, encouraging them to explore this craft further as a hobby or a small business venture.
Chairperson of the programme, Nana Ayim Kyerebea I, emphasized that climate change is a serious issue that poses dangers to our health, especially the reproductive system in women and girls. She encouraged participants to pay close attention to education and training as it will benefit them in their daily lives.
