The Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, will visit Ghana from June 2 to 5, as part of a multi-country tour of selected West African nations.

The visit aims to bolster international cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and further, the global effort to achieve a comprehensive ban on nuclear tests.

During his two-day visit, Dr. Floyd will pay courtesy calls to several key government agencies, including the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MoFARI).

These visits are designed to foster stronger ties and collaboration in the realm of nuclear security and non-proliferation.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Dr. Floyd will deliver a public lecture at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) of the University of Ghana, GAEC.

The lecture, aimed at policymakers, academics, security services, and the general public, will provide insights into the CTBTO's mission and the significance of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) for global security.

The CTBTO was established to ensure that states which sign and ratify the CTBT refrain from conducting nuclear explosions, including nuclear weapons tests. Ghana, a signatory of the CTBT since 1996, has established a CTBT National Data Centre (NDC) at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.

This centre plays a crucial role in supporting international efforts to monitor nuclear weapons test explosions worldwide.

Dr. Floyd's visit underscores the importance of international cooperation in the fight against nuclear proliferation and highlights Ghana's active role in promoting global peace and security through adherence to the CTBT.
