Effutu Constituency Member of Parliament and Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marked his 46th birthday by screening over 500 individuals for Hepatitis B, including 200 inmates and 300 officers at Effutu Prisons.
The initiative, held in collaboration with the Mumbies Foundation, aims to raise awareness about Hepatitis B, with May 27th now dedicated as Hepatitis B Awareness Day in the Effutu Constituency.
Beyond the health screenings, Mr Afenyo-Markin provided meals for all inmates and donated a 50-inch television and various relief items to the prison.
About a month ago, the MP commissioned an office for the testing, vaccination and management of hepatitis B in the Effutu Constituency.
In 2023, he voted one million Ghana cedis (GH1 million) to help fight the Hepatitis B virus after many people died through the disease in the Effutu Constituency.
During the commissioning of the project, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin emphasised the importance of dispelling misconceptions surrounding Hepatitis B. He urged residents to refrain from attributing the disease to spiritual causes and instead encouraged them to seek medical attention for testing, treatment, or management.
Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Kassim Zubairu, speaking on behalf of Afenyo-Markin, emphasised the importance of such initiatives to protect inmates from potential Hepatitis B outbreaks.
Israel Adorbley, Project Director for Mumbies Foundation, stated that their goal is to eradicate Hepatitis B from the Effutu Constituency.
Assistant Director of Prisons for Winneba Prisons, Joseph Nyankey, commended Afenyo-Markin for his support, expressing hope that the efforts would significantly improve the health and well-being of the inmates.
