The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the Ghana Police Service's arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, stating that it lacks merit.
Reportedly, the police detained Dauda in connection with a recent disturbance during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one individual was injured and subsequently hospitalised.
Preliminary investigations by the police implicated Collins Dauda in the unrest that disrupted the registration process on Saturday, May 11.
However, in a press release issued on Monday, May 13, and signed by the NDC's Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, the party vehemently denied the accusations leveled against Mr Dauda.
The party contends that the fracas was orchestrated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and NDC members were compelled to retaliate in defense of their members who came under attack.
Consequently, the NDC demands the immediate release of Collins Dauda and urges law enforcement to apprehend the actual perpetrators responsible for the disturbances.

"We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration centre on Saturday, 11th May 2024.”
“Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency," an excerpt of the statement said.
