Yinson and West African Rescue Association (WARA), an international SOS-affiliated company, joined efforts to commemorate World Malaria Day on 25th April, 2024 in Kejebril in the Western region of Ghana.
Both companies teamed up to support the people of Kejebril in their fight against malaria in Ghana, an intervention the communities described as a timely.
The initiative kicked off with a community-wide clean-up on April 24.
Yinson Ghana staff, WARA personnel, and Kejebril community members desilted gutters and and cleared stagnant water in and around Kejebril. The symbolism was clear: a clean environment is a powerful weapon against malaria.
On the same day, Yinson and WARA took their mission to a nearby primary school. Approximately 100 schoolchildren gathered to learn about malaria disease. Dr. Kobby Dzakpasu led an engaging session and answered the children’s questions. Visual aids brought the topic to life, helping the children understand the ins and outs of malaria. Key discussions covered everything from the causative agent and recognizing symptoms, to effective prevention methods.
As an interactive twist, the school children were given colour kits to express their impressions of malaria through art. The top five winners received well-deserved awards.
April 25 marked World Malaria Day, a global observance recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). Yinson, WARA, and the Ahanta West Health Directorate organised a public durbar at the Kejebril Health Centre.
This year's theme was "Health Equity, the Cornerstone for Achieving Malaria Elimination in Ghana”.
At the durbar Yinson and WARA donated essential medical equipment and supplies to the Kejebril Health Centre, including 1 microscope with accessories, 1 Hematology Analyzer with reagents, 1 Nebulizer Machine, 2 Large Oxygen (50L) Cylinders with flow meters, 1 Otoscope set, Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs), Lonart DS, 5 Packs of Sanitizers and 200 Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs).
In addition to the donated items, the Kejebril Health Centre’s labour ward was also refurbished.
"We firmly believe that local impact begins with familiar places," said Edward Mensah, Yinson's Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator.
A month ago Yinson received a call from WARA, inviting them to join the fight against malaria. Without hesitation, Yinson chose Kejebril as the project site. "What better way to give back than to start from our doorstep?" Mr. Mensah remarked.
However, Mr. Mensah expressed a desire to shift Yinson's focus beyond malaria. "There are many experts here who can handle that better than I can. I want to share why Yinson engages in social interventions. It’s more than just corporate responsibility; it’s a fundamental belief that goes beyond profit margins," he emphasised.
"At Yinson, we recognise that profits should not be confined to our balance sheets. They should extend beyond our business interests and contribute to a better world—for this generation and those yet to come," Mr. Mensah added.
