Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has advised Ghanaians to assess the quality of leaders presented to them to determine if they possess the skills to lead the country.
According to him, a country's development and growth depend on leaders' skills.
His comments come after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) officially outdoored Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for the party's flagbearer for the second time running.
During the unveiling ceremony on April 24, she assured Ghanaians, among other things that the next NDC government will protect the national purse.
She expressed concerns about Ghana's national assets and natural resources, highlighting the trend where these resources are diverted to obscure entities through opaque deals, often benefiting relatives and friends of the government.
Speaking on the JoyNews News Desk on April 25, Dr Asah-Asante explained that to select the right leaders, individuals must interpret the political messages on their merits and evaluate whether they can solve the current challenges the country faces.
"The woman is going to complement the efforts of John Mahama, and of course, they will build on their party's work and their records to be able to win the support of the people. It is the duty of Ghanaians to assess whether it is a party worth considering this time around.
"If that decision is made by the general masses of the people at the end of the day, they will give them their votes, and they will win the elections. If that is not the case, Ghanaians will show which party is worthy of their service.
“But we want quality people to show up and demonstrate knowledge that they understand our situation, that they are ready to deal with our problems head-on, and that they are going to govern us with all honesty so that we know that we can entrust our political power to their care,” he stated.
The political scientist added that during the campaign season, many political parties make promises they can never fulfil. Therefore, Ghanaians must decipher what is the truth and what is not.
“If we have people who can just come and promise heavens and then give us something that is not meaningful, we take political notice of that, and when the opportunity avails itself the next time, we throw them out," he said.
