The workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region have issued a warning to the Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, demanding immediate payment of his outstanding electricity bills.

According to the workers, the Minister's private residences will be disconnected from the national grid if he fails to heed the warning.

The workers' warning follows the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah's decision to order the arrest of the Ashanti West ECG General Manager, Michael Wiafe, after a disconnection exercise at Kumasi Technical University.

In an interview with Citi News, one member said they will disconnect Mr Osei-Mensah from the national grid even if he owes a pesewa.

"If the Regional Minister owes any bill in his private house we are going there....we will disconnect him then the police must come and arrest all of us. If he arrests any regional boss all of us will be at the prison yard."

"So, they should expand the prison yard because all of us are coming. We are expecting him to apologise. We know all his houses. We are going there. He should prepare to pay his money, or we will disconnect him,” he said.

Another worker said he was concerned about how the Minister's actions is perceived by the public, noting that "the actions can lead to other customers emulating what he did."

"We think that he should just apologise unreservedly to ECG then we move on. We have a series of actions to take. This is the first step. That is why we said that if he is not apologizing someone should tell him to do so,” the worker added.

The workers have since last week demanded an unqualified apology from Mr Osei-Mensah and a withdrawal of the case from the Police Station.

Additionally, the National Executive Committee of the Senior and Junior Workers Union of ECG held an emergency meeting and decided to bar four managers from attending Regional Security Council (REGSEC) meetings.

The General Managers of Ashanti East, West, South, and Sub-Transmission are all automatic members of the Council.

They noted that this action will continue until Simon Osei-Mensah, who serves as both the Chairman of the Council and Regional Minister, issues an official apology to the General Manager of Ashanti West.

However, the minister has yet to speak on the matter.

Meanwhile, members of the ECG on Wednesday began wearing red bands in their offices nationwide, in solidarity with their colleagues.

This forms part of their protest to demand an apology. They have also assured that customer service will not be affected.
