National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Ghana Maritime Authority, Customs, National Security, Defence Intelligence, and police are among state institutions and security agencies supervising the salvaging of crude oil content of a split vessel.
Although initial information about the incident was scanty, the Communications Manager of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Abdul-Kudus Mohammed in an interview with Daryl Kwaw on Market Place revealed they received an emergency request.
“NPA had a request for an emergency evacuation of the crude in that vessel over a mechanical fault it generated that will not allow it to reach its intended place for berthing and approval was granted to their request”
“And relevant organizations that play roles in the importation of fuel and discharge were all invited to ensure that the product is safely evacuated,” he said.
According to him, the crude oil is for Akwaaba Refinery at Spintex in Accra but the emergency required that the cargo be discharged into bulk road vehicles for onward transportation.
Joy News has learnt that the vessel carrying crude oil split upon reaching Ahwiam, Old Ningo in the Ningo-Prampram district last Friday.
At the site, several tankers are lined up waiting in turns to transport the crude oil.
Some community members have raised fears of possible spillage but Abdul-Kudus Mohammed said there is no cause for alarm.
“As of now, I’m yet to receive any information to the effect that the salvaging has had any negative impact on marine life. All mechanisms have been put in place to ensure safety is guaranteed when it comes to lives and properties in the area,” he assured.
