Former President John Mahama has expressed concern about the approach of African governments towards businesses owned by their political opponents.
He believes that one of the reasons why there are not many affluent African businesses is because governments tend to target businesses established by their political adversaries.
During the 2nd edition of the Afro-Heritage Conference and Awards in Lagos, Nigeria, Mr Mahama emphasised the importance of African governments refraining from actions that could lead to the destruction of businesses belonging to their opponents.
He stressed that such businesses contribute to the collective development of their respective countries and the continent as a whole.
In a panel discussion at the event, Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urged Africans to support and encourage their compatriots when they embark on entrepreneurial endeavours.
He believes fostering a supportive environment for businesses, regardless of the owner's political affiliation, is essential for the continent's progress.
Mr Mahama thus stressed that promoting unity and solidarity among Africans is crucial for the continent's advancement.
He added that by supporting one another's success and endeavours, Africans can pave the way for the development and prosperity of current and future generations.
“We must not be afraid for our business people to succeed, we must not be afraid to have rich Africans."
“Governments must not come and think that because some other governments created this business, then we must kill it. That’s part of the problem that we have. We must believe in ourselves, in adversity comes opportunities.”
