Director of Communications and Spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has advised Ghanaians to disregard comments by the National Democratic Congress flagbearer suggesting that the "one student, one tablet" initiative was aimed at buying votes.
John Mahama said the government initiated this policy to convince students turning 18 to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December polls.
But Mr Aboagye, responding to these concerns, said that over the last seven years, the government has demonstrated its commitment to transforming all sectors of education.
Speaking at a press conference on April 9, he clarified that these transformations although evident at all levels including kindergarten, junior high, and secondary school, the former president will not admit it.
“The former president needs to do away with this bitterness against the beneficiaries of free Senior High School because clearly, they cannot be blamed for his failure as a President. Neither can the two occasions that he lost the elections or was rejected by the people of Ghana be blamed on these Senior High School beneficiaries.
“This government is particularly happy to indicate that since the assumption of office in 2017, the education sector is one sector that has been given utmost priority for nearly seven constant years and it is for a good reason,” he said.
He argued that for a country to completely eradicate poverty, education is pivotal. This, he added, was the reason the government had heavily invested in the sector.
On the back of this, he said “It is for this reason that systematically and deliberately this government has been working to transform the various levels in our educational sector looking at both soft and hard issues. This government is not only building classrooms. This government is transforming education from the kindergarten level to the tertiary level.
