The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has appealed to the government to establish a scholarship scheme to afford more individuals the opportunity to specialize.
According to the President of the Society, Dr Samuel Donkor, although there is an institution for specialization, not many individuals can fund their education. As such, the Society has very few specialists.
“We need specialists in pharmacy. We have oncologist specialists in pharmacy, we have cardiovascular training specialists, and in a whole lot of fields. The government has established Ghana College, yet our pharmacists going to Ghana College are not being sponsored and that is on our agenda - human resource empowerment.
"Please look into it and let us get the sponsorship for pharmacists to be able to go to college for specialization,” he said.
He made these comments during the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s stakeholder engagement with the Pharmaceutical Society on April 4.
On his part, the Vice President pledged to make the pharmaceutical industry the best in the sub-region.
He assured that similar efforts will be made to build the infrastructure required to train pharmacy students, just as he commissioned the hostel at Trinity Theological Seminary with the support of the GETFund.
“We are also doing that even for Kayaye. Yes, we have skilled training centres that I would be commissioning next to train Kayaye. We build these things.
“So why can't we build a major pharmaceutical training center for our pharmacists who would deliver the goods to us? So, I fully agree to this,” he added.
