A helicopter belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, made an emergency landing at Bonsukrom, a town near Agona Nkwanta, in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.
It is unclear yet what caused the forced landing.
According to a resident who spoke to JoyNews, the helicopter hovered over the area for some time in an attempt to find a suitable site for an emergency landing, but lost its balance and crashed into nearby trees.
The aircraft was lying some 20 metres from the Bonsukrom road.
Amateur footage shows a side view of the helicopter trapped among the shrubs.
The Military, in a statement, said the helicopter had on board 21 passengers made up of staff of the Ghana National Gas Company, and aircrew.
They were said to be "Conducting routine offshore powerline inspection of the Atuabo Gas plant when the incident occurred."
Another eyewitness told Myjoyonline that some of them sustained minor injuries but no deaths had been recorded.
He said "We were on our way back from Dixcove when we heard a loud 'boom' sound."
This incident is said to have attracted many of the townfolk to troop to the site leading to a huge crowd.
But security personnel tried to keep the crowd at bay while the passengers were conveyed to the hospital for healthcare.
One of the injured is being transported to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for emergency medical attention.
In the statement issued by Director of Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Aggrey-Quashie, the GAF added that "preliminary assessments have commenced to ascertain the cause of the incident."
