Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, is urging the government to take immediate action to complete the Shama District Hospital.
He emphasised that it is essential for the government to ensure that the contractors responsible for building the health facility are brought back to the site, stating that the people of Shama deserve better healthcare infrastructure.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, March 12, Mr Akandoh stated that over the past four years, the Minister of Health has not provided any updates on the status of the Shama Hospital during sessions in the House.
The MP for Juaboso argues that this lack of communication is unacceptable, especially considering the importance of the hospital to the community.
“For me, that is quite disrespectful, so we sending clear signals and a clear warning to the President and the Vice President that not until they commence, complete and put to good use the Shama district hospital, we would be here on several occasions. The president said there were dedicated sources of funding, and this project was not going to see any delay. Go back and read the speech of the president,” he stressed.
He accused the current government of neglecting the health sector and warned against using the construction of the hospital for political gain.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Parliamentary candidate for Shama, Emelia Arthur underscored the difficulties constituents encounter in accessing healthcare.
She revealed that, despite securing funding four years ago and President Akufo-Addo launching the project, no progress has been made.
Mrs Arthur also criticised the government's plan to demolish the existing hospital, which healthcare personnel opposed.
“What would have happened if they had demolished that health center and not built it like we are experiencing here? Where would people get healthcare from?
The MP for Central Tongu and member of the Health Committee, Alexander Gabby Hottordze, criticised the government's allocation of funds.
He argued that the government's prioritization of wasteful ventures over essential projects like building health facilities is unjustifiable.
“We have seen that nothing has been done in Shama, and we are today, and it is not going to be a nine-day wonder. We will pick it up for you; we will try as much as possible that they also start this work and bring it to completion so that it can be put to good use and the people of Shama can access quality healthcare.”
