This morning on Newsfile, host Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panellists delved into the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Value Bill, known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill by Parliament.
Since the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, the Finance Ministry has raised concerns about the implications for the country should President Akufo-Addo assent to the bill. These risks include a potential loss of $850 million in budgetary support from the World Bank this year alone.
The Ministry explained that “for 2024, Ghana will lose US$600 million in Budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund.” The Ministry further explained that “Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing” over the next six years.
Also discussed on the show was the 67th Independence Day anniversary, which was celebrated on March 6, 2024, and whether the country has failed or is failing to improve since gaining independence.
Again, the host and his panellists talked about the nomination and unveiling of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang by the National Executive Committee and Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress to partner with the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama in the upcoming general elections.
