Deputy Minister-designate for the Gender Ministry Dr Benjamin Sekyere Yeboah has disclosed being mocked by some fellow MPs upon the announcement of his nomination.
Speaking during his vetting in Parliament in Accra on Friday, he revealed that many of his colleagues questioned his suitability as a male nominee for the Gender Ministry.
Dr. Yeboah shared with the Appointments Committee Chairman, Joseph Osei Owusu, that only former Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, encouraged him to embrace the opportunity.
"Mr. Chairman, it may interest you to know that when the President appointed me to the Gender Ministry, many people asked me, 'Are you a female?'
"I had to quickly research to find out if I was the only male to hold such a position, but I discovered that I may be the fourth person," Dr Yeboah explained.
He continued, "It was only Honourable Joe Ghartey who encouraged me, saying, 'Sekyere, you are fortunate. Your position is significant. You will rise.'
"He was the only one who supported me. Others mocked me, questioning why the President chose me for the Gender Ministry."
Despite the initial challenges and scepticism, Dr Yeboah expressed his determination to make a meaningful impact and redefine the Gender Ministry.
"But I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I am committed to working hard to ensure that gender issues are addressed comprehensively," he concluded.
