The Alliance of Feminist CSOs has applauded the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congres (NDC) John Mahama for once again choosing Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.
In a press release, dated March 7, the AFCSOs indicated that this selection is an inspiration for young Ghanaian women, stating that this sends a signal that their dreams are attainable, especially when they work to build an enviable future and improve their competence.
“AFCSOs will also like to congratulate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang once again for earning this enviable nomination. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has shown that women and young girls must work hard enough and lay the foundation of competence which will become the bedrock for their future,” parts of the statement read.
“We must admit that her enviable track record over the years as a woman who has risen to a high office as the first female Vice Chancellor of a major public university in this country, and a former Minister of Education has shown so far that leadership is about no other but competence and one's ability to deliver service to one's nation. A woman described by H.E John Dramani Mahama as a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant and a role model,” the AFCSOs noted.
The group added that Prof. Opoku Agyemang is also a woman who embraces all regardless of one's background.
AFCSOs indicated that her nomination also shows former President John Dramani Mahama has not lost hope in women, adding that, he has presented Ghanaians with a highly qualified woman with a great track record as his running mate.
The group appealed to Ghaianas to vote massively for the NDC to provide hope for not only women but also young girls of today and generations unborn.
“As women, if we believe in our own course we must support and campaign overwhelmingly towards this course of making Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang the first Female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana," AFCSOs added.
This is the second time Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has been selected as John Mahama's running mate. She was first chosen in 2020 but the NDC lost the general election to the ruling New Patriotic Party.
On March 7, 2024, the NDC announced Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman as the running mate for John Mahama in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
In a press release dated Thursday, March 7, and signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Kwettey, the party highlighted Prof. Opoku-Agyeman's distinguished career as an academic and leader, emphasising her dedication to education and public service.
The nomination of Prof. Opoku-Agyeman, according to the party, reflects the NDC's steadfast commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership positions.
