Residents of Tontokrom in the Ashanti Region are appealing to the government to establish a community mining scheme in the area.
The demand follows a long-standing tension between residents and Asanko Gold Mines over the latter's concession and security measures.
Reports indicate that one resident was shot and killed during a confrontation with private security officers of the Asanko Gold Mine on March 2.
This infuriated the residents who attacked the company's security personnel. The incident resulted in the death of two more individuals.
Speaking with JoyNews on March 4, the residents while expressing their frustration, issued an ultimatum to government.
According to them, they will boycott the upcoming election if nothing is done by June 2024.

The Chief of Tontokrom also lamented the plight of his people, stating that they live in constant fear.
“They have also intimidated us with the police and the military. We are pleading with the government to establish a community mining scheme for us. We would not let Asanko Mines take over our community,” he said.
The District Chief Executive of Amansie South, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, said they were considering taking legal action against the mine to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, he said calm has been restored to the community, and people have returned to their daily activities.
