President of the Greater Accra Market Women Association is urging everyone to prioritise peace before, during, and after the 2024 general election.
Mercy Needjan emphasised that peace is crucial for any productive activity to take place.
Speaking on Joy News, she pointed out that women are particularly at risk during times of conflict, unlike men who have more mobility to escape danger.
“You see when there is riot, it is rather unfortunate you see the men with their long legs, leaving their children and their wife behind and running. You will see the women trying to pack things for the child. Put the child at the back, hold one on the shoulder, put a basket on the head trying to grab everything, before she will leave and if you do not take care she will go on like that and whatever is coming will come and meet her.”
She mentioned that without peace, there would be chaos in the market, making it difficult for market women to do business.
Mrs. Needjan stated that while politicians in the upper echelons may maintain friendships, it is often those outside this circle who engage in conflict and discord.
“They all work together, they meet together. They do everything together and all that they are saying is whoever wins must be accepted because at every election, it is only one person that would win. So everybody is prepared to meet the winner for the rest to follow up,” she stated.
