The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has refuted Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's remarks regarding the state of Ghana's coffers inherited by the Akufo-Addo government in 2017.
Dr. Bawumia, during his national address on Wednesday, February 7, claimed that the John Mahama administration left behind a challenging economic situation for the Akufo-Addo administration.
Despite this, he asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) commenced efforts to address and rectify these issues.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, when we assumed office in 2017, we were confronted with an economy with declining economic growth along with several problems and challenges."
"A graphic description of the state of the economy at the time was provided by the former President and my main opponent for the 2024 presidential election, who announced to the nation when he was President that all the meat was finished and the economy was left with bones.
"Notwithstanding the difficult economy we inherited, we had to get on with it and start to fix the problems," Dr Bawumia said.
In response, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, issued a press statement contradicting Dr. Bawumia's assertions. Gyamfi stated that the previous Mahama administration left behind a stable economy for the current administration.
Mr Gyamfi advised Dr Bawumia to maintain honesty and transparency with Ghanaians as he aspires to lead the nation.
“The claim that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government inherited empty coffers and that President Mahama said that the meat was down to the bone in 2016 is also FALSE. The statement was not made in 2016 as falsely claimed by Bawumia.”
"This statement was made in reference to revenue shortfall due to the huge expenditures on implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2013. This was at a time that 75% of total tax revenue was spent on salaries following the implementation of Single Spine – The statement was not made in 2016 as falsely claimed by Bawumia.”
"Indeed, the Ghanaian economy both in 2013 and 2016 was way better than it is today. What type of economy did the NPP and Bawumia inherit in 2016?”
