The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, is hopeful that the clause-by-clause amendment process of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill will be completed by the end of Friday, February 9.
The House is set to resume consideration of the bill today after a recess on Tuesday, February 6.
The anti-gay bill, officially titled the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, has stirred significant controversy both within the country and on the international front.
The proposed law aims to criminalise same-sex sexual relationships, including oral and anal sex, with penalties ranging from five to 10 years in prison.
Furthermore, it seeks to criminalise the advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, the promotion of same-sex marriage or cohabitation, and the provision of support services to LGBTQ+ individuals.
In addition, the bill proposes punishment for individuals or organisations involved in organising or participating in LGBTQ+ events, providing resources to support LGBTQ+ people, or producing or distributing materials that promote LGBTQ+ rights.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, during his address in Parliament, revealed that the bill is expected to undergo comprehensive revisions by Friday, February 9.
“The Business Committee on February 5 programmed to have the first consideration of the bill beginning February 7, and we do anticipate that we will be able to get it to a closure by Friday [February 9].”
Meanwhile, the majority of Ghanaians, according to a survey conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) are in support of the bill.
