Private legal practitioner and human rights activist, Martin Kpebu, has clarified that the former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Benjamin Agordzo was not aware of any coup plot.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, January 27, he argued that the alleged coup plot was discussed on a private executive platform that ACP Agordzo was not part of.
According to Mr Kpebu, ACP Agordzo's references to the Arab Spring and the economic situation in Ghana were not meant to encourage any unlawful actions.
“We voted for President Akufo-Addo in 2016 because he preached Arab Spring. When it started in Tunisia, how did the young man emulate himself? He said there were no jobs right? So they didn’t have jobs and couldn’t earn a living to pay for their bills,” he said.
Mr. Kpebu explained that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) also invoked the idea of an Arab Spring in order to win support during the 2016 election.
“You find Akufo-Addo sitting at Peace FM and talking about Arab Spring because the current government cannot provide jobs for the youth, so vote for me and that is why we voted for him.”
“Akufo-Addo preached Arab Spring and that is the message we all bought. We all thought that Mahama was so corrupt and so you would come and do us right and that is why we voted for you. You come out and you turn out to be more corrupt than Mahama.”
The legal practitioner emphasised that Mr Agordzo had been vindicated since he had the right to freedom of expression and the right to freedom of assembly.
Six individuals implicated in an alleged coup plot have been convicted for conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason.
However, Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Agordzo, Colonel Gameli, and another junior military officer, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, have been acquitted.
The charges, dating back to April 24, 2021, involved Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the late Chief Executive Officer of Citadel Hospital, ACP Dr. Agordzo, and eight others.
The accused faced various charges, including conspiracy to high treason, abetment to high treason, and high treason.
