The 2020 Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called on Ghanaians to dismiss reports suggesting that some prominent party members took blood oaths with a sword.
The former Youth and Sports Minister dismissed the video, asserting that it had been manipulated by detractors to generate public disapproval for the party.
He stressed that the video is misleading and inaccurate, urging the Ghanaian public to disregard its content.
Mr Ankrah clarified that the purported ceremony was organized at his request before the 2020 elections when he served as the Director of Elections for the NDC.
He insisted that the video has been edited by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to serve their specific interests.
“That publication is inaccurate, misleading and deliberately twisted to suit the agenda of our detractors.”
“It is yet another example of how seriously I took my role and how committed I was to ensure that we did our work with the utmost integrity in the interest of our party and its members and supporters,” he added in a press statement issued on Thursday, January 18.
Mr Ankrah clarified that the video in question is unrelated to the party's national executives and officials responsible for overseeing the forthcoming 2024 general elections.
“I, therefore, urge the public to ignore the fake news.”
“I also call on our members and supporters to rally behind our party officials and support our national officers in our quest to win the next elections and deliver the people of Ghana from the hardships and misgovernance of the Akufo-Addo/ Bawumia government,” he further stated.
In a widely circulated video on social media, Mr Ankrah and other NDC officials were seen taking an oath using a sword.
During the oath, they pledged loyalty and vowed to defend the party under all circumstances.
