Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has announced that he is ready and willing to serve as the running mate for the New Patriotic Party's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, in the 2024 presidential elections.
The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe constituency made it clear that he is prepared to serve his country since it is his duty to do so.
“I am here to serve my nation, in any capacity I find myself I will serve this nation,” he said on Accra-based Citi FM on January 9, 2024.
Dr. Adutwum's declaration has set him up in direct competition with other prominent figures within the NPP including Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
The NPP’s National Council which has the power to make exceptions when necessary granted Dr. Bawumia additional time to select his running mate in December last year.
Background
The Vice President is expected to propose a running mate, whose suitability, in terms of general appeal to the electorates, must be accepted by the meeting.
According to the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, in an earlier interview on JoyNews, the party had generally agreed that the running mate for the newly elected party’s flag bearer would be chosen from the Ashanti Region.
This, the Bekwai MP had said is the only solution to the party winning the 2024 general election.
