The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has threatened to blacklist communities that manhandle officers in the line of duty.
This follows a disturbing incident at the O.A. Travel and Tours terminal at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle where unidentified individuals incensed by the alleged delay in the Fire Service’s response to a fire emergency resorted to pelting the fire tenders with stones.
It took the intervention of the police service to restore calm and allow the firefighters to get to work.
Narrating what happened, Spokesperson of the GNFS, A.D.O1, Alex Nartey said “We received a call and in less than 10 minutes our appliance got here and upon arrival at the scene they were being obstructed from performing their duties.
“The people broke the lock that they could come out and because they were caged in they kept throwing stones and bottles, anything they could lay their hands on, to the extent that they even broke the windscreen of the appliance so our men had a hard time and had to call in for police assistance to fight the fire.”
Commenting on the attack, A.D.O1 Nortey said areas where fire service personnel are attacked in the course of their duties are often blacklisted.
He said this means in the event of future fires, Fire Service personnel will not be dispatched to the area.
