A Non-Governmental Organisation, Eco-Conscious Citizens, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to ensure that noise laws are enforced at all times throughout the Yuletide season.
According to the group, noise nuisance is a criminal offence, and enjoying the season should not be seen as an excuse to break the law and reduce the quality of life of fellow citizens.
The group, lamenting the current noise pollution from churches, drinking spots, social events, commercial announcements, event centres, to restaurants hosting live bands in residential areas, described it as unbearable.
It noted that when left unchecked, noise pollution could result in serious health complications such as high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbances, and stress.
To prevent such complications and other unwarranted disturbances during the Yuletide, the group has called on the Inspector General of Police to put out a dedicated telephone number where noise nuisance complaints can be made.
It added that the IGP must ensure that police officers are reminded to take noise complaints seriously.
“We rely on the Police to protect the citizenry and help fight the canker of noise pollution,” the statement from the group added.
