The Gerald Asamoah Foundation and German-based Kinderherzean have partnered with the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) to perform heart surgeries for children in Ghana.
The Gerald Asamoah Foundation, founded by former German international Gerald Asamoah, together with Kinderherzen is seeking to come to the aid of 50 Ghanaian children who have heart diseases. The two German foundations will be working with the Cardiothoracic Department of UGMC.
A team of 30 dedicated health professionals including pediatric doctors and nurses arrived in Ghana over the weekend ahead of the commencement of the surgeries.
30 children are expected to be operated on while another 20 will be administered other medical services.
Speaking to Joy Sports about the initiative, Asamoah, who hails from Ghana said: "Yesterday [Monday] was the first day and we operated on about eight to nine kids. We are happy and willing to do more than 30 kids."
"I am so happy to have the German doctors with me who just took their time to come and help us also."
The CEO of UGMC, Dr. Kwame Anim-Boamah, said he is thrilled to have the two parties come up with the initiative.
"We want to express our gratitude to the Gerald Asamoah Foundation and Kinderherzen for the very good work that is being done this week," he noted.
"The good thing is that the expertise for these surgeries is something that we don't have readily available in Ghana and so the coming of this mission is a really welcoming one."
The Gerald Asamoah Foundation was established with a vision to support children with heart diseases from around the world.
