The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken on the recently elected flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, November 15, Mr Gyamfi emphasised that the focus of the 2024 general elections should be on the trustworthiness and vision of aspirants, rather than their religion.
The NDC spokesperson in the post asserted that Dr Bawumia lacks these qualities as he enters the election fray.
Mr Gyamfi claimed that Ghanaians will elect a competent leader for the country, pointing to former President John Dramani Mahama as possessing the necessary competence and trustworthiness to steer the economy out of its current challenges.
"The 2024 election is not about the religion a Presidential Candidate professes or where he comes from. Rather, it’s about TRUST, INTEGRITY, and COMPETENCE, particularly in relation to economic management, and VISION, among others. Ghanaians will not be electing a religious leader who will be leading the nation in prayers or sermons come December 7, 2024."
"Rather, we will be electing an honest, competent, experienced, and visionary leader who can stop the economic decline, transform the economy, and create jobs and prosperity for all Ghanaians; a Leader who will lead and rally the nation to build the Ghana we want!"
He urged Dr Bawumia to focus on implementing policies that ameliorate the plight of Ghanaians now and refrain from engaging in a divisive religious campaign.
"Alhaji Bawumia must redirect his efforts towards bringing his policies to fruition and refrain from a dangerous, opportunistic, hypocritical, duplicitous, and divisive religious campaign that he is introducing into our political landscape."
"Ghana is a united country where Christians and Muslims have coexisted peacefully and intermarried for many years. The assertion that Bawumia is the Messiah aiming to unite Christians and Muslims is baseless and a product of the NPP and Bawumia's lack of a meaningful message for the Ghanaian electorate."
