A professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Lord Mensah says Ghana can have a 24-hour work system.
He was speaking in relation to an earlier comment by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama who had emphasized the need for this working modality to improve the nation’s production.
The former president made the comment in a speech at the TUC Hall on his Building Ghana Tour where he engaged the leadership of the Trade Union Congress on his vision for Ghana.
According to Prof. Mensah, the idea is feasible as the country already has services that operate around the clock.
“There are some critical sectors like healthcare, emergency services, transportation. Customer support services that are required to operate 24 hours.”
He noted that while the idea could lead to more job creation when effected, it will need sound national policy to make it workable and sustainable.
He said sound policy structures and directives will empower private sector players to work towards putting in place a 24 hour work day to achieve the NDC flagbearer’s vision.
He said, “The same number that are working during the day, we can get the same working in the night one way or the other to create jobs. It all bores down to how the government wants to position itself,”
“By so doing if businesses are active and can reduce interest rate as a result of government reducing its budget deficit then obviously engaging private sector to run 24-hour services by increasing production, having market out there.
“We turn out to create jobs. I believe that we should not take the 24-hour job creation all by itself but other policies that must go with it to make sure that this is achieved we have to look at all this holistically. So I believe it is fixable”
