Leadership and organisational development practitioner, Taka Awoi, says there is the need for a shift in the culture and political environment Ghana’s politicians are operating in.
According to her, without a significant shift in that environment, no amount of self-attitudinal change by the people will be enough to promote good and accountable leadership.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, she stated that a toxic political culture has the power to both undermine and corrupt even the best leaders.
“We need to shift the environment/culture or political system that leaders are operating in. because even if you do the inner work, even if you work on your character and you operate in an organizational structure or political system with very little transparency, high levels of inequality in terms of power, little voice and agency from those you’re leading, chances are that before you know it you’ll fall into the trap of displaying all the poor leadership,” she said.
She further added that a good political and organisational environment has the potential to keep even the most corrupt person in check.
“Or vice versa if you’re someone who doesn’t have much character but you work in a company organisation or political system that has high levels of accountability, systems of participation and engagement, you’ll find whether you like it or not, you’ll start to find that I have no choice, I will be kicked out if I don’t appear to be fit for this particular role,” she said.
